What Are CBD Gummies?

What Are CBD Gummies?

CBD gummies have quickly become one of the most popular ways to take CBD. But what exactly are they, how do they work, and are they actually effective?

In this guide, we’ll break down everything you need to know about CBD gummies from how they’re made to how they support everyday wellness.

KEY TAKEAWAYS
  • CBD gummies are non-intoxicating gummy supplements derived from hemp. In the UK, they must contain less than 1mg of THC per container to be legal.
  • The FSA recommends a daily limit of 10mg for healthy adults. Gummies offer precise dosing, making it easier to track intake compared to oils.
  • Because gummies are ingested, they undergo "first-pass metabolism." Effects typically peak within 1–3 hours and can be enhanced by eating a high-fat meal.
  • Choose between Full-spectrum (includes trace THC), Broad-spectrum (THC-free), or Isolate (pure CBD) based on your lifestyle and drug-testing needs.
  • Only purchase CBD listed on the FSA Novel Foods register. Natural Strains provides batch-specific, ISO-accredited lab reports to ensure purity and safety.
  • CBD gummies can be purchased from Natural Strains, a tested and verified CBD supplier in the UK.

What are CBD Gummies?

CBD gummies contain a measured amount of cannabidiol (CBD), which is derived from the cannabis sativa L. genus.

Unlike THC, which is also derived from the cannabis plant, CBD is a non-intoxicating phytocannabinoid, meaning it doesn’t cause any psychoactive effects.

Instead of inducing a high, it interacts with the body's endocannabinoid system to help support general wellness. It’s a non-psychoactive compound believed to have anti-inflammatory, anxiolytic, and neuroprotective properties.

Why are they popular?

CBD gummies, in particular, are a fun and tasty way to get your daily dose of CBD. You can get gummies in various shapes and flavours, from juicy peach to tangy cherry, providing a subtle way to ingest CBD on the go.

What varies between brands is mostly the type of CBD extract used (often described as isolate, broad‑spectrum, or full‑spectrum), the CBD dose per sweet, and whether the seller can show clear testing and compliance information.

At Natural Strains, our CBD gummies are gluten-free, GMO-free, and vegan-friendly.

The different types of CBD Gummies

There are three different types of CBD gummies you can buy:

1. Full-spectrum CBD gummies

These gummies contain all the natural compounds, such as flavonoids, terpenes, and trace amounts of THC (less than 0.2%) found in the cannabis plant.

2. Broad-spectrum CBD gummies

Broad-spectrum gummies contain all the naturally occurring compounds found in the cannabis plant, apart from THC. That means they offer all the same benefits, without any concern for the entourage effect

3. CBD isolate gummies

Different from broad- and full-spectrum gummies, CBD isolate sweets don’t contain any other terpenes or cannabinoids. Instead. They’re made from pure CBD extract, ideal for those who only want to consume CBD.

How long do CBD gummies take to work?

Gummies are different from oils and vapes in how they behave in the body.

CBD gummies are swallowed, so CBD undergoes digestion and liver metabolism before entering the bloodstream, which is why they take longer to show effects. Oral CBD often reaches peak blood levels around 1–3 hours (sometimes longer), depending on dose and product formulation.

A 2025 study on the effect of high-fat meals on CBD absorption also found that these meals increased CBD exposure compared with fasting. That essentially means that the same gummy can feel different depending on meal timing and eating habits.

What are CBD gummies used for?

CBD gummies are used for overall wellness rather than as a medical drug.

Many CBD gummies promote benefits such as:

  • Feelings of balance

  • Improved focus and clarity

  • Promote relaxation and calmness

Most people tend to choose gummies because they want to create an enjoyable, wind-down routine, a set amount per sweet rather than measuring drops, a discreet, travel‑friendly format, or they want to avoid inhalation routes altogether.

CBD in gummy form is also a non-addictive supplement without any stimulating effects, making it beneficial for those who have struggled with addiction in the past.

Who can take CBD gummies?

Anyone who is looking to create a wellness routine can take CBD gummies, as long as they’re healthy and don’t have any allergies to the ingredients.

Children, pregnant or breastfeeding individuals, those trying to conceive, or people on medication (who haven’t consulted their GP) should avoid consuming CBD. The UK has a legal blood limit for delta‑9‑THC under drug‑driving law, so take caution when ingesting CBD before driving.

Athletes can take CBD, but UK Anti-Doping (UKAD) explains that competitors still face contamination risk from THC or other cannabinoids that are prohibited in sport, so it’s best to do so with caution.

Since CBD gummies usually contain a lot of sugar or other sweeteners to mask the bitter taste, it’s also best to check whether the nutritional information aligns with your diet.

The proven (and suspected) benefits of CBD gummies

CBD gummies fall under the category of oral wellness products, which means they offer different benefits than CBD used for medicinal purposes.

Many studies have focused on the benefits of CBD gummies, which have produced some proven and suspected benefits. These include:

1. Stress and anxiety support

While the subject is an active area of research, some studies have shown that CBD can be used to help relieve symptoms of anxiety and stress.

CBD appears to act across multiple molecular targets, including serotonin receptor systems such as 5‑HT1A. That means someone may feel calmer or more balanced after consuming CBD gummies.

2. Supports relaxation before bed

Some CBD products claim to help improve sleep and reduce insomnia.

However, a small placebo-controlled pilot trial found that 150 mg of CBD taken nightly for primary insomnia did not reliably improve sleep outcomes compared to the placebo.

Although well-being benefits were reported, such as helping participants feel calmer and clear-headed afterwards.

3. Improved focus and clarity

Since CBD gummies are suspected to help some people feel calmer or more settled, that may have a knock-on effect by reducing mental noise and, therefore, improving concentration.

However, current research has not proven that CBD gummies directly improve focus or cognitive performance.

Important note: Some CBD products claim to help manage pain and inflammation. However, a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of painful knee osteoarthritis found that high-dose oral CBD added to paracetamol did not provide additional pain relief compared with a placebo.

Although CBD does have intriguing biology and is being continuously studied to observe its effects on inflammatory pathways and conditions, consistent clinical pain support remains uncertain.

Potential downsides of CBD gummies

While gummies containing CBD can be really beneficial for those who hate the bitter taste of hemp, there are some potential negatives of taking them that we need to touch upon.

After all, non-intoxicating doesn’t necessarily mean risk-free.

Some CBD gummies contain a trace amount of THC

Some products may contain trace THC or other controlled cannabinoids because of contamination, mistakes in manufacturing, or poor quality control.

That brings a risk for those who are constantly drug tested for their job, drive every day, or simply want to avoid any intoxicating effects.

Inconsistency with manufacturing

Since most CBD products aren’t FDA approved, purity and strength can differ between different products, even from the same brand.

That means it’s challenging to understand what you’re taking and to maintain a consistent routine.

Liver damage

Ingesting more than the recommended 10mg/day of CBD may cause damage to the liver or thyroid.

The FSA recommends that adults limit their CBD intake in food to 10mg per day (for high‑purity CBD isolate), as this is the safety threshold for daily CBD consumption.

In a randomised clinical trial in healthy adults published in 2025, liver enzyme increases were more common in the CBD group than in the placebo group at a daily dose. Therefore, this is more of a risk at higher dosages, so those taking low levels of CBD gummies should be safe.

Known negative side effects

An updated systematic review of randomised controlled trials (2022) reported that participants experienced diarrhoea, drowsiness/sedation, appetite changes, headache, dizziness, nausea, and abdominal discomfort (with more serious events appearing more often in epilepsy trials at high doses).

However, this is less of a risk for CBD gummies, as these contain lower levels of CBD than medical CBD.

If you experience any negative side effects, stop taking the CBD product and seek medical care.

Are CBD gummies safe and legal?

In the UK, CBD products must meet the ‘exempt product’ rules under the UK drugs law. All CBD gummies must contain no more than 1 mg THC per container (packet or bottle).

Since CBD gummies are treated as ‘novel foods’, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) states that CBD food products require authorisation before they can be sold legally.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) also maintains a list of novel food applications and advises that products not on it should be removed from the market. However, products on the list don’t necessarily mean they’ve been authorised; they're just a guideline. You can read more about that here.

What other studies show

Many studies on CBD have actually shown positive responses in people with epilepsy.

One study shows that CBD inhibits calcium and sodium channels, suggesting it could serve as a therapeutic by modulating membrane electrical potential.

A similar study conducted on epilepsy patients also produced similar results; patients with treatment‐resistant epilepsies (TREs) were given CBD orally. The results showed that CBD had a positive effect by reducing seizures and acting as a neuroprotectant to reduce damage associated with seizures.

Prescription cannabidiol (Epidyolex) has been studied in randomised trials and is used for certain epilepsy syndromes, such as Dravet syndrome, Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, and the tuberous sclerosis complex.

Safe and tested CBD gummies in the UK

The best place to start is by looking for products linked to a credible novel food application on the FSA public list, and treat products not on that list with caution.

Check the label for CBD per gummy and per pack, so you know what you’re purchasing. A batch-specific certificate of analysis displaying the cannabinoid profile (including THC) and, ideally, other safety checks should also be located under the label.

At Natural Strains, we publish batch lab reports and state the standards used for third‑party testing (including ISO/IEC 17025:2017 accreditation and cannabinoid profiling methods), so customers can match what’s in the pouch to what’s on paper.
